The FX fee explained

The 0.55% FX fee (reduced from 0.70% in February 2025) is charged when you convert AUD to USD to fund your account, and again when you convert USD back to AUD on withdrawal. It is not charged on each individual trade — only on fund transfers.

This is a spread built into the exchange rate you receive. Stake quotes you a rate 0.55% less favourable than the mid-market rate. For a $10,000 deposit that means you receive USD as if you converted $9,945 at the real rate. A minimum fee of US$2 applies per conversion.

For buy-and-hold investors, the FX fee is paid exactly twice per position: once when depositing to buy, once when withdrawing after selling. A stock held for five years incurs the same 1.1% round-trip FX cost as one held for five weeks.

The key advantage of per-deposit FX: deposit A$5,000 once and make five separate trades — you pay 0.55% FX once on the deposit, not five times. This makes Stake's effective FX cost significantly lower for active investors who batch their deposits.

Hello Stake US stock — FX cost by deposit size

FX is charged on the AUD deposit, not per individual trade. Brokerage is US$3 per trade (charged separately in USD). Round-trip FX = deposit conversion + withdrawal conversion.

AUD depositedFX on deposit (0.55%)Brokerage (per trade)Round-trip FX total
$500$2.75US$3$5.50

$5,000$27.50US$3$55.00
$10,000$55.00US$3$110.00

Round-trip FX = AUD→USD on deposit + USD→AUD on withdrawal. Brokerage of US$3 charged per trade regardless of deposit size. Does not include capital gains tax or TAF.

ASX trading fees

Stake charges a flat A$3 per ASX trade for trades up to A$30,000 (0.01% for trades above that). This is on the standard free account — no premium subscription required. ASX trades settle in Australian dollars with no FX conversion involved.

The flat fee structure means ASX trading on Stake becomes more cost-effective as trade sizes grow. A $500 ASX purchase costs 0.6% in brokerage — reasonable. A $10,000 purchase costs just 0.03% — exceptional value.

Superhero offers free brokerage on ASX ETFs specifically. For ETF investors, Superhero has a slight edge on ASX. For individual ASX stocks, Stake's $3 vs Superhero's $2 is a minor difference.

Stake Black: the premium subscription

Beyond the standard free account, Stake offers a premium subscription called Stake Black. It's an optional paid tier designed for more active investors who want lower fees and additional features.

Stake Black typically includes:

  • Reduced FX rate — lower conversion cost on AUD/USD deposits than the standard 0.55%
  • Priority customer support with faster response times
  • Access to IPO and pre-IPO investment opportunities on the Stake platform
  • Additional portfolio analytics and research tools
  • Enhanced account features

Who is Stake Black for? For most buy-and-hold investors making occasional deposits, the standard free account is sufficient — the $3 flat brokerage and 0.55% FX are already among Australia's most competitive rates. Stake Black makes most sense for investors regularly depositing large amounts in AUD (where a lower FX rate adds up materially) or those who actively pursue IPO opportunities.

How to minimise your Stake fees

Deposit once, trade multiple times

The 0.55% FX fee is charged on deposits, not per trade. Deposit A$5,000 and make five trades — you pay FX once ($27.50) not five times. This makes batching deposits far more impactful than batching individual trades.

Hold for the long term

The FX fee is paid twice per position — once on the deposit to buy, once on the withdrawal to sell. A stock held for 10 years costs the same in FX as one held for 10 weeks. Long-term buy-and-hold investors get the best effective fee rate.

Use the referral bonus to offset your first FX cost

Signing up with referral code jaymem884 gives you $10 in trading credit. On a $1,000 first deposit, your FX cost is $5.50 — meaning the bonus more than covers it.

Hold USD between trades

After selling a US position, keep your balance in USD rather than immediately converting back to AUD if you plan to reinvest. This avoids the double-conversion cost of USD→AUD→USD. Stake allows you to hold USD balances in your wallet.
